A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
