The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
